6/29 - Let's try a newsletter
sup? Some of you might be getting this as a surprise and some of you might have already gotten the full nauseating pitch from me about this newsletter. Well, here it is. Which I guess really means: here is something.
The idea behind this is simple: I want to share the food content I consume with people who I think might find it somewhat interesting. Restaurants, ideas, stories, wine, beer, music, pictures of overly priced and perfectly weighted spoons– it will all be here at one time or another. I promise to keep it short, light, and as to the point as my rambling brain will allow. Without further ado, attempt one:
Restaurant(s):
Places you can still eat at this week.
-Bongos NYC
-Genki Omakase NYC
-Patiala NYC
-Giant Chicago
-Chilam Bilam Chicago
Ideas:
-Great article by Bon Appetit comparing Fillipo Tomasso Marinetti’s The Futurist Cookbook to the current “bio-hacking” phenomenon.
-Genetically modified salmon are sneaking into the global market. While you might not care for ethical reasons, if these things somehow break into the wild (very possible) marine ecosystems will be certainly, properly fucked. Shouldn’t we have learned by now that nature isn’t something we can pulverize and dominate? Just a thought. Or, I guess, your spicy salmon roll can come from whatever this is:
Stories:
-Restaurant debauchery can be difficult to accurately represent. This New Yorker piece outlining the drinking and harassment at famed Montreal restaurant Joe Beef nails it.
Wine:
-Djuce makes me want canned wine, I think. Although not available in the US quite yet, I’m fairly bricked on the concept of sustainable, art-forward, Michelin sommelier sponsored wine. Someone should copy this idea and start it here in #FreedomLand.
-Popped by Spuyten Duyvil last week and walked away having the best orange wine of my life from Red Hook Winery. It’s not available for sale online, but plenty of their other shtufff is. A trip out to their tasting room and then stopping by Hometown would be a vibe.
Beer:
So we won’t be doing anything like this, ever:
Instead, watch this guy drink a thirty year old Coors Banquet.
Music:
Have been stoked on iamalex for a while and his new album goes. A true K.O.T.V. and the perfect sound for an easy meal, backyard cocktail, or highly contemplative walk to Chipotle.
Something random:
A throw away section and will probably be the most self serving of the bunch so I figured I’d stash it at the bottom. If you’re still here, let me apologize in advance but I am about to give an unsolicited reading recommendation (gross, I know). This short eight page essay by Zadie Smith explains the many sticking points of her novel writing process. There’s much to pick through and apply to whatever you’re doing everyday. Enjoy!
If you find something interesting please share it with me. Don’t hesitate to forward to your friends or family either. Would love for this to become more of a community and not just me shouting into the void. Thanks for reading and looking forward to next week.
