7/28 - Blendid: an argument for robots in food
No Madison Brown updates this week. I’ve contacted the PR person, emailed Sky Is The Limit Management, and DM’d the instagram page. Will keep you all abreast.
Today– mostly links. But the links, they are… good.
Restaurants:
Places you can still eat at this week.
Ensenada (Williamsburg): Fish and mezcal. Endorsed by the chef at Nura.
Brew Inn (Greenpoint): Tots, burgers, wings, beers, and enormous salads. If Cheesecake Factory and Buffalo Wild Wings had a child and it was adopted by a rich family.
Spaghetti Tavern (UWS): You can drink five old fashioneds, watch stand up comedy, eat meatballs, and lose your wallet here. It has been done, at least once.
Alcohol:
Good, informative article outlining the nuances in tequila and mezcal. Really good cocktail recipes included as well.
Happy hour has been illegal in Massachusetts since 1984. I don’t really care. But I needed a second bullet point so here’s another link.
News:
Shrinkflation. It just means you’re paying the same and getting less food. Makes sense– but they’re doing it with packaged goods as well. They’re putting less tissues in the same boxes and not telling you. Let’s get upset about it.
Someone designed a sustainable avocado and they are calling it the “ecovado.” No hate, absolutely no hate, but that’s fucking dumb. Just look at it:
Something I Like:
This has been fairly negative so far and I’d like to correct course. Recently I found Blendid- a company that automates smoothie production using robots.
It’s easy to make fun of Blendid and no one does it better than this ten year old boy on Youtube who informs his 23 subscribers that this is, in fact, the stupidest thing he’s ever seen. At first glance, I felt the same way. There’s plenty of YouTube videos documenting Blendid machines malfunctioning and while the videos are hilarious, I’d argue that Blendid will be much more than another futile display of solutionism.
This week Blendid launched at Love’s Travel Stops in California. Love’s stays open 24/7 and is a staple for commercial truck drivers. No one should have to work through the night and those that do shouldn’t have to eat like shit because of it. Blendid feels like a legitimate solution to something I don’t want humans to have to fix. Bravo.
Thank you for reading. I loved how many of you reached out with Madison Brown takes. As always, if you’d like me to stop sending you this email just let me know. Thanks!
